The Drum Thing (Prestel, 2016)
I love drummers. Though they rarely get the spotlight, they are music’s driving force. For me, drummers embody a special kind of duality: on the one hand, they channel the intuitive rhythm we all have inside us, connecting us to our primal instincts. On the other, they display respect and restraint, managing time with intelligence and skill.
This book is my tribute to all those men and women who keep the beat, featuring images of world’s leading drummers – including Tony Allen, Ginger Baker, Travis Barker, Cindy Blackman, Patrick Carney, Jack DeJohnette, Bryan Devendorf, Sly Dunbar, Steve Gadd, James Gadson, Dave Grohl, Mark Guiliana, Steve Jordan, Jim Keltner, Airto Moreira, Neil Peart, Questlove, Jim Sclavunos, Ringo Starr, Lars Ulrich, Chris Dave, Joey Waronker, and Jack White. I photographed all these iconic figures offstage, in their own rehearsal spaces – ranging from state-of-the-art studios to basements and gardens. The resulting images show drummers out of the limelight, but also front and centre on their own terms.
